Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the Safe Cop License Plate program..
Who is eligible for Safe Cop plates?
Safe Cop plates are available exclusively to current NPDF Law Enforcement Members and Associate Members. They are NOT sold to the general public and are NOT available at the DMV. Donors can become Associate Members and then apply for plates.
How long does processing take?
All plates take approximately 6–8 weeks to process and deliver after your completed application and payment are received at NPDF headquarters in Morganville, NJ.
What happens if I don't renew my membership?
You must maintain active NPDF membership every year to retain your plates. If membership is not renewed by the March 15 deadline, a $25 late fee applies. The DMV may require you to surrender your plates if membership lapses.
Can I get personalized plates?
Yes! All three states offer personalized plate options. New York charges $158, Pennsylvania charges $185, and New Jersey charges an additional $50 after you receive your standard plates first. Check your state DMV for character availability.
Where do I mail my application?
All applications and payments should be mailed to: National Police Defense Foundation, 21 Kilmer Drive, Building 2, Suite C, Morganville, NJ 07751. No faxes are accepted.
Do I need a specific registration status?
Yes, you must have at least 3 months remaining on your current vehicle registration before expiration to apply. In New Jersey, plates cannot be registered to a business vehicle.
